The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) and Domestic Reverse Charge (DRC) are no longer new rules. HMRC's initial 'light touch' period has long since ended and we are seeing a greater focus on whether businesses and organisations are applying the rules correctly.

Getting it wrong can have significant consequences. We are increasingly seeing HMRC challenge construction supplies where VAT has been incorrectly charged rather than the reverse charge applied, with assessments potentially arising even where the customer would ordinarily be entitled to recover the VAT.

And this isn't just an issue for traditional construction companies. The rules can affect any organisation buying or supplying construction services, including property businesses, housing associations, charities, schools and organisations undertaking development, refurbishment or repair projects.

What we will cover

Steps businesses can take to strengthen their processes and reduce risk:

  • CIS fundamentals and organisational obligations
  • DRC fundamentals and when the reverse charge applies
  • the interaction between CIS and DRC
  • implications for contractors, subcontractors and end users
  • impact on organisations outside the construction sector
  • common invoicing and reporting errors
  • VAT, CIS and cash-flow consequences of getting it wrong
  • HMRC's current approach in practice
  • practical examples and risk management steps.

Relevant to organisations involved in construction, property development, refurbishment or repair projects, including housing associations, charities, schools, universities, local authorities, healthcare providers and commercial businesses.
