In 2020, other than Covid-19, SPACs (Special Purpose Acquisition Companies) or “blank check companies”, as they are called in the US, took the market by storm. As of April 2021, 302 SPACs were listed in the US (raising US$98.1 BN), with another 262 at pre-IPO stage, compared with 248 listed during the whole of 2020 (raising US$83.4 BN).
Clearly, SPACs aren’t going away any time soon. In fact, they are coming to Asia – SGX has already announced the listing guidelines for SPACs and reportedly will have the first listed SPAC by the end of the year.
