Budget 2027 Malaysia conference in Kuching on tax reforms, AI trends and economic outlook

Introduction

Malaysia’s MADANI Government will table its fourth Budget on 9 October 2026, under the theme “Reaching for the Skies, While Anchored on Our Values”.

It is an apt theme for a country with big ambitions, and a global economy that keeps raising the stakes. We live in a time when a conflict halfway across the world can send oil prices soaring past US$100 a barrel. Supply chains can be disrupted overnight. Inflation can make headlines. And what starts as a geopolitical shock thousands of kilometres away will eventually trickle down into business costs, consumer prices, and household budgets.

Malaysia has held up relatively well. Targeted subsidies and prudent economic management have helped cushion households from higher energy costs, while inflation remained contained at 1.6% in the first quarter and 1.9% in the second quarter of 2026.

But closer to home, the tax landscape has also changed significantly. Capital Gains Tax, expanded SST, e-Invoicing, and the Stamp Duty Self-Assessment System are reshaping how businesses operate and comply.

For households, the questions are just as pressing. Are incomes keeping pace with living costs? What more can be done to strengthen purchasing power? And as Malaysia competes for investment, talent and higher-value jobs, where will the next wave of opportunities come from?

Budget 2027, therefore, raises some big questions:

  • Will tax reform make compliance simpler, or more complicated?
  • How can Malaysia remain competitive while strengthening its fiscal position?
  • What can help businesses manage costs and invest for growth?
  • How can Malaysians increase their incomes and build financial resilience?
  • Where should Malaysia place its bets as artificial intelligence (AI), shifting supply chains and the energy transition reshape the global economy?
  • At the Crowe Malaysia 2027 Budget Conference, we will go beyond the headlines to examine the measures and policy choices shaping the year ahead, and what they could mean for businesses, individuals and Malaysia’s broader economic outlook.
