Whether you are new to tax in the housing sector or looking to refresh your existing knowledge, our Introduction to Tax for Housing Associations 2026 course provides a practical overview of the key tax issues affecting housing providers.

The course will run over four 90-minute sessions in September, and you can choose how many sessions you would like to attend. We are also pleased to offer a discount for multiple staff bookings, should this be of interest to your colleagues. The course will be delivered via Microsoft Teams, numbers will be strictly limited to allow for discussion, with plenty of time allocated for questions.

Session 1: Housing association activities 

  • How do the various taxes affect housing providers?
  • What are the VAT treatments of various sorts of income and expenditure?
  • Corporation tax treatment of trading and investment income.

Session 2: VAT recovery 

  • When can VAT be recovered on costs?
  • Partial exemption.
  • Preparing VAT returns.

Session 3: Buying land

  • SDLT charges and reliefs on buying land.
  • When will the vendor seek to charge VAT?
  • Golden brick, disapplication and other strategies. 

Session 4: Developing land 

  • VAT on construction and conversion works.
  • Design-and-build.
  • Construction Industry Scheme (CIS). 
  • VAT and corporation tax treatment of different uses.

  • Finance staff taking on responsibility for tax for the first time.
  • Finance staff who have experience of tax in other sectors but are new to housing.

Cost
