In Crowe's latest spotlight highlighting our talented graduates, please enjoy the below testimony from Tax Trainee, William O'Leary.

What almost stopped you from applying to Crowe's grad programme?

Coming from an Economics and Finance background at the University of Limerick, I had very little exposure to accounting or tax. It felt like a big step into a completely new area, especially with professional exams ahead of me, and I wasn't sure if I'd be able to make the transition successfully.

Looking back, I'm really glad I took the chance. It has been a steep learning curve, but it's also been incredibly rewarding. The experience has challenged me, helped me develop new skills, and given me confidence in an area I never imagined working in when I was in university.

What's one thing you actually do day-to-day that you didn't think you would on Crowe's grad programme?

One thing that surprised me was how much direct client interaction I have. I didn't expect to be working with clients so early in my career, but it's been a great way to build confidence and develop my communication skills.

Coming from an Economics and Finance background, accounting and tax were completely new to me, so every day brings something different and provides an opportunity to learn. I also get exposure to different teams within Tax, which means no two days are the same. The variety of work keeps the role engaging and has helped me develop both professionally and personally

What's a tip you'd give someone applying now?

Be yourself throughout the application process. Crowe is looking for people who are eager to learn, have a positive attitude, and are willing to challenge themselves.

Don't worry if you don't have all the technical knowledge yet. Focus on showcasing your personality, your experiences, and what motivates you. Skills can be developed over time, but enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to learn are just as important.

What would you say to someone who thinks they're not 'the type' to work somewhere like Crowe?

I'd say don't rule yourself out. I didn't come from an accounting background, and I still found my place here.

If you're hardworking, open to learning, and willing to ask questions, you'll fit in well. Crowe values potential and attitude just as much as previous experience, so don't let self-doubt stop you from applying.

What's something your team does — big or small — that you'd genuinely miss if you left?

I'd genuinely miss how supportive everyone is. No question ever feels like a silly question, and people are always willing to help because they remember what it was like when they started their own careers.

I'd also miss the strong social culture, the flexible working arrangements, and the great work-life balance. I play a lot of sport, so having that flexibility is something I really value. Moving to Dublin and living away from home for the first time was a big adjustment, but having such a welcoming and supportive team made the transition much easier.
