Ball State kicks off lecture series with talk by author of leadership book

MUNCIE, Ind. (March 19, 2014) -- Ball State University will kick off its Chuck Allen/Crowe Horwath LLP Leadership Lecture Series with a presentation March 26 by the author of a critically acclaimed book on the issue.

Harry M. Jansen Kraemer Jr. will discuss issues raised in his 2011 book “From Values to Action: The Four Principles of Value-Based Leadership.” He is an executive partner with Madison Dearborn, a private equity firm based in Chicago, and a clinical professor of management and strategy at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.

The event is from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Pruis Hall. It is free and open to the public. Following the presentation, there will be a discussion, networking session and book signing.

In his book, Kraemer asserts that values-based leadership is a discipline that is possible for anyone to achieve. The principles are self-reflection, balance, true self-confidence and genuine humility. He will speak on how together these principles can build a solid foundation for any leader who wants to make a difference for the greater good of society.

Kraemer exemplifies this by directing all proceeds of the book to One Acre Fund, a nonprofit that invests in African farmers to increase their incomes while reducing hunger and poverty.

The lecture series is offered through Ball State's Department of Accounting with support from Crowe Horwath LLP, one of the largest public accounting and consulting firms in the United States, and Chuck Allen, the firm's chief executive officer (CEO) and a Ball State graduate.

Allen earned a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1975, became a successful certified public accountant and rose through the ranks to become the CEO of Crowe Horwath LLP in 2007. He was honored by the Department of Accounting with the 2012 Alumni Award of Excellence.

The five-year lecture series is designed to enhance student learning and faculty development by bringing proven business leaders to the university community. While on campus, the visiting executive speaks to students and faculty members in interactive sessions and an enriching keynote presentation. The series provides an opportunity for members of the Ball State community to enhance their leadership skills.
