Geopolitics, taxation and international competitiveness
On 15 September 2026, Bucharest hosted “Tax Geopolitics and Megatrends”, a high-level event organised by the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Romania (CCIpR) and hosted at Crowe Romania, bringing together tax professionals, business leaders and experts to discuss how geopolitical developments and major global trends are reshaping taxation, investment and international business.
The event provided an opportunity to look beyond purely technical tax matters and explore the increasingly close relationship between geopolitics, taxation, international competitiveness and global economic transformation.
Prof. Piergiorgio Valente, President of CFE Tax Advisers Europe, participated as Guest Speaker, offering his perspective on the profound transformations currently affecting the international tax landscape.
His contribution focused on the growing interconnection between geopolitical developments, taxation, the digital economy, artificial intelligence and data, highlighting how these forces can no longer be considered separately when assessing the evolution of tax systems and the challenges facing governments, businesses and society.
In an international environment characterised by geopolitical tensions, technological transformation and changing economic priorities, taxation is increasingly influenced by developments that extend far beyond traditional tax policy.
Prof. Valente highlighted the need to consider these transformations as part of an interconnected framework, in which digitalisation, AI, data, economic developments and geopolitical dynamics interact and contribute to redefining the way tax policies are designed and implemented.
The discussion addressed some of the major issues currently shaping the international business and tax environment, including the impact of geopolitical developments on taxation, changes in the global economic landscape, investment attractiveness, regulatory developments and international competitiveness.
Particular attention was also devoted to the implications of the digital economy and artificial intelligence, which are introducing new challenges for tax systems and policymakers and contributing to a broader reconsideration of traditional approaches to taxation.
The event also featured Gabriel Biriș, providing a perspective on Romania’s economic and tax environment, and an Expert Debate Panel with Liviu Gheorghiu, Partner, Tax at Forvis Mazars Romania; Alexandru Comănescu, Tax Associate Partner at KPMG Romania; and Mitel Spătaru, Tax Partner at Crowe Romania.
The event was opened with institutional remarks by H.E. Laura Aghilarre, Ambassador of Italy to Romania, providing a broader perspective on the international and economic context in which businesses are currently operating.
The meeting offered an important opportunity for dialogue between the Italian and Romanian professional and business communities, bringing together different perspectives on the forces that are transforming the international economic environment.
Piergiorgio Valente’s participation reflects his longstanding commitment to the study of the relationship between international taxation, global governance, economic transformation and geopolitical dynamics, as well as to fostering dialogue between institutions, businesses and tax professionals on the challenges shaping the future of taxation.
The Bucharest event confirmed the growing importance of approaching international taxation within a broader framework, capable of taking into account not only regulatory developments but also the geopolitical, technological and economic transformations that increasingly influence business strategies, investment decisions and tax policy.
Crowe Valente thanks Crowe Romania and the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Romania for hosting and organising this valuable opportunity for discussion and international exchange.
