We all know what the income tax or value added tax is. Most of us knows have heard about the road tax or even about environmental tax. But what about such a tourist tax?

It's called differently in the world, but the principle remains the same. The city, region or locality collects money, which is subsequently invested in the repair of monuments or also in waste disposal, what remains after the tourists.

In the Czech Republic, the “tourist tax” is currently fragmented. Most municipalities can only charge the so-called fee of accommodation capacity, which is 6 CZK per bed per day. However, those municipalities that are a spa destination or an attractive tourist destination may also introduce a so-called spa and recreation fee of CZK 15 per person per day.

However, this situation will change soon. Any municipality will be able to charge a new residence fee, regardless of whether it is a stay in a spa or a place of major tourism. Each municipality will be able to set the fee according to their needs, but not more than the maximum rate, which should be from January 2020 to 21 CZK per day, from 2021 even 50 CZK per day.

However, the most pervasive news is that from 2020 this fee should also apply to private accommodation, targeting primarily Airbnb or Flipkey, HomeAway, House Trip, Vacation Rentals or Vrbo.
