Regulating the future: How insurers can begin to lead on AI governance

Artificial intelligence is poised to transform insurance, but most insurers remain cautious, experimenting with potential uses rather than deploying AI at scale across underwriting, claims or pricing. While a few frontrunners are piloting AI-driven underwriting, claims automation and fraud detection—and some have embedded models quietly in analytical workflows—the majority are still waiting for regulatory clarity or organizational readiness before committing to broader implementation. This hesitation is understandable, yet regulators are making it clear that AI governance is now an essential component of operational resilience and customer trust, shifting expectations from having policies on paper to demonstrating how AI systems actually work, with governance that is practical, evidence-based and proportionate to risk.
