Liam Watkins started with the Crowe and Findex graduate program in audit, three months ago. Since then, he has been developing his financial skills and knowledge through real-life experience and sharing his experience with other graduates who are looking for the opportunity to work with a diverse and supportive team.

Firstly, tell us a little bit about who you are and what your role at Crowe is?

I am a recent graduate from the Auckland University of Technology. I graduated with a Bachelor of Business Degree majoring in Accounting and Finance. During my time at University, I took an interest in my auditing paper which pushed me to apply for an audit graduate role with Crowe. I was fortunate enough to be accepted for the role and have enjoyed the many challenges and learning opportunities I get from working with a wide range of clients.

How long have you been at Crowe?

I have been working at Crowe for three months and that time has flown by extremely fast as my team keep me on my toes with deadlines and new things to learn. In my time here I have established that this is a fast paced but incredibly supportive organisation.

How did you get the role at Crowe?

I saw the position advertised on NxtStep. I had always been aware of Crowe and Findex because of their presence at career fairs and having talked to people from Findex I knew it would be a great organisation to work for. Although I was not sure if I would be successful, I still applied and thankfully after a few interviews I was offered the role

What was the application process like?

The application process was very straight forward. After seeing the job advertised, I applied on the Findex website and attached my CV and cover letter. Not too long after, the Crowe and Findex recruiting team reached out to me expressing their interest. I had a phone interview, then another interview on Microsoft Teams before receiving an offer for the role.

Can you describe a typical day at the job?

Working in an audit graduate role, no two days are the same. I could be going out to see a client, working in the office or even working from home.

A typical day would consist of me waking up at 6am, getting ready and then catching my train to arrive at the Auckland office at 8am. Normally I would spend the first 30 minutes of my day going through and replying to emails. The rest of the day I will dedicate to working on an assigned client which could either be working on a client with other team members or working by myself. Around 12:30pm I normally have lunch with other work colleagues for an hour. I will continue working for the rest of the day until 5pm. After finishing for the day on Thursdays or Fridays I will also share a drink with my work colleagues to conclude a generally busy week.

What would you say to others thinking about applying to the graduate program?

I would encourage anyone to apply for the graduate program at Crowe and Findex. This program provides so many learning opportunities and a chance to work with a diverse range of supportive people.
