As part of a green push to encourage the use of more recycled products, the UK is introducing the Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) on 1 April 2022. This tax will sit with manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging which does not contain at least 30% recycled material. Where the tax is due those affected businesses will need to account for an amount of £200 per metric tonne of plastic packaging within the scope of this new rule.

This tax is applicable to businesses established in and outside of the UK. The legislation also places a requirement on businesses to register and keep records even if no tax is payable. Therefore, it's critical to understand the new rules in order to gather the relevant information needed to assess its implications and know your obligations – and this needs to be done within the next four months.

What we will cover

  • The plastic packaging within scope of this new tax (and what is out of scope).
  • How the tax is calculated.
  • Who has liability to pay the tax and how that is achieved.
  • The records that need to be kept, registration requirements and other compliance obligations, including for situations where tax is not payable.
  • The actions that businesses should now take to assess the applicability of plastic packaging tax to them.

Who should attend

This new tax will require information to be drawn from across the business in order to assess its impact. We would suggest that the following roles would be expected to have responsibility for this:

  • Indirect tax managers
  • Finance Directors
  • Logistics or operations team members.
