Home Health Agencies: Potential Risk to Health Systems

Despite their relatively small impact on the bottom line, home health agencies (HHAs) present a risk area that should not be ignored by healthcare system leadership or internal auditors. HHAs are under increasing regulatory pressures and are subject to internal organizational compliance concerns. The financial, legal, and regulatory implications of weak internal controls are significant. Internal auditors should identify risks during the risk assessment process and design audits to test controls in areas that are the most significant for the HHA.
