Clinical Minute: Suicide Risk

The National Institute of Mental Health defines suicide as a death caused by self-directed injurious behavior with intent to die. Although there isn’t one set cause attributed to suicide, it often occurs when stressors exceed the coping abilities of persons with mental health disorders. Suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in 2016, but the second leading cause of deaths in people age 10-34. The most frequent suicide method in hospitals is by hanging.
