Steve Petroulakis (off-site) can attribute his involvement with Give Kids the World Village to his niece. “She chose the organization to perform community service work for school and we ended up making it a family project,” he explained. “I have been a volunteer ever since.” Give Kids the World Village is an 84-acre, nonprofit resort in central Florida that provides weeklong, cost-free vacations to children with critical illnesses and their families, often working with other wish-granting organizations worldwide. As an “angel” (a title that refers to all volunteers), Steve has worked at various venues throughout the village, serving breakfast, scooping ice cream and driving the train that transports families. He also serves as an ambassador, representing the organization at internal and external events and providing tours of the village to visiting organizations and new volunteers. Working at Give Kids the World Village reminds Steve daily of what is really important. “My cousin passed away from cancer at 16,” Steve recalled. “Her brothers’ and sisters’ memories of her final days were only of hospital stays and medical procedures. Give Kids the World Village gives families the opportunity to make positive, happy memories.”
