Since 2016, Renee Beauchemin (Hartford) has been volunteering with the Be Like Brit Foundation, Inc., an organization that supports the people of Grand Goâve, Haiti through projects including a children's home, water distribution resources, housing construction and healthcare services. The foundation honors the memory of Britney Gengel, a college student who was volunteering in Haiti in 2010 when a catastrophic earthquake struck the island, killing 300,000 people – including Britney. Renee has made three trips to Haiti, including one following Hurricane Matthew in 2016 to help with relief efforts. In her most recent trip in December 2017, Renee helped to build a home for a community member. She also spent time in the children's home, helping in English classes, practicing holiday songs and organizing holiday gifts for each child. "I've met some amazing people on my trips," Renee shared. "Despite the severe poverty in which the majority of the Haitian people live, they are so very grateful. The hope and love that I feel each time I return to Haiti has completely changed my life." Renee also sponsors a 13-year-old boy, Macson, at the children's home. "Throughout the year I help with the cost of his education, school uniforms, food and other expenses," said Renee. "On this last trip, I spent some time with Macson, which gave me a chance to get to know him better." Besides her mission trips, Renee collects food and clothing in Crowe's Burlington office and from family and friends for the foundation, plus she participates in the Be Like Brit annual 5k walk each September.
