Friday, November 11, is Veterans Day, a U.S. holiday honoring veterans for their sacrifice and patriotism. Crowe honors its veterans, as well as those who have who have ongoing reservist obligations or are deployed for active duty. Many Crowe individuals, both past and present, have served in the United States Armed Forces, including Partner Melinda DeCorte (Dallas). Melinda joined the Army because of her love of country, and she trained to become a paratrooper while a cadet in college. “Once airborne qualified, I wore the silver wing on my uniform,” Melinda shared. “While on active duty, I was assigned to the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, NC where I spent some time on ‘jump status’ – referring to the period of time when a soldier is actively jumping. Most jumps are conducted from an aircraft such as a C-130 or C-17 and are from about 1200-1300 feet in elevation.” Melinda was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army after graduating from Georgia State University with a degree in economics. “I served as a finance officer for various Army units within the continental United States and in South Korea,” Melinda explained. “I provided accounting services and finance support to soldiers, civilian employees and family members and was responsible for funds management, accounting, vendor pay, foreign national pay and civilian pay customer services.” During her five years of service, she also gained practical knowledge of and experience in federal accounting and financial management. Today, Melinda leverages that experience as she works with Crowe clients. She works mostly with government clients and specializes in federal accounting, auditing and financial reporting. “I have spent much of my time in public accounting focused on civilian federal agencies, but for the past two years I have been auditing the U.S. Navy financial statements,” Melinda said. “This engagement has required me to apply both my knowledge of federal accounting and reporting as well as my military knowledge and experience.”
